Homelessness can affect anyone at any time in their lives. LGBT individuals face unique challenges with homelessness. Discrimination and inequality can be the course of homelessness for our community, but can also create complex barriers when accessing mainstream services.
The Village Angels engage with individuals on a regular basis, in Manchester’s Gay Village, who are experiencing (or have experienced) homelessness in their lives. As part of our work we have collated useful contacts and processes. The following should outline what support is available for someone in need of housing advice, with a particular consideration given to what help is available outside of normal working hours.
Initial Support: Manchester City Council
Manchester City Council’s Homelessness Service is an emergency service which assesses whether the Council have a duty of care to an individual presenting with homelessness. There are a strict set of criteria that need to be met in order for the Council to make an offer of housing support.
Manchester City Council offer help to individuals to try and prevent homelessness in the first place. There are services aimed at tackling a variety of issues such as neighbour disputes, problems with landlords and anti-social behaviour. Manchester City Council is committed to tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic hate crime and will offer you full support if you’re suffering any type of discrimination in your home as a result of prejudice against your sexual or gender identity.

Manchester City council run individual assessments for people presenting with homelessness. This service operates on weekdays 9am - 4:30pm and will assess whether an individual is in priority need of housing.
To start this process of assessment you will need to have a few things:
- Have lived in the area covered by Manchester City Council for at least 6 of the last 12 months OR have lived in Manchester for at least 3 of the last 5 years OR you have a parent, brother or sister who has lived in Manchester for at least 5 years OR you work in Manchester.
- Your National Insurance Number (National Insurance Card or document displaying it).
- Details of your address or last address.
- The name of your doctor.
- Details of other organisations that are helping you.

No Second Night Out (NSNO)
The aim of NSNO is to offer people that are sleeping rough for the first time an immediate alternative; to stop the need to engage in another night of rough sleeping.
An LGBT specific housing advice service. A London based organisation but is a good source of information for LGBT specific housing issues nationally.

Albert Kennedy Trust
For LGBT youth who are made homeless or are living in a hostile environment. Available to 16 – 25 year olds. Pop-in service available but it is best to call ahead before your visit.
